The Coronation of the King – At a Cathedral Near You

19th April 2023

This is how our cathedrals are preparing to be part of the Coronation and you can join in too.

Lighting up red, white and blue, live streaming the Coronation, music fit for a King, exhibitions telling our Royal stories, Ring for the King, dancing, picnics, street parties and services of thanksgiving for our new monarch.

The Coronation: At a cathedral near you.

Please check individual websites for up-to-date details.

A specially written prayer for the Coronation here.

The Coronation service will begin at 11am at Westminster Abbey – the start of a weekend of events to mark this historic occasion.

Bradford Cathedral is one of a number of cathedrals live-streaming the coronation on its big screen with the opportunity for people to participate in an act of worship.

Full details of the Music for the Coronation can be found here.

On Sunday 7th May there will be a Civic Service of Thanksgiving for the King’s Coronation at 3pm. The Cathedral will also be participating in the ‘Ring for the King’ where a quarter peel of the Cathedral’s bells will be rung ahead of the Sunday Civic Service.

On Monday there will be a litter pick of the streets around the Cathedral for The Big Help Out followed by a shared lunch.

The Very Revd Andy Bowerman, Dean of Bradford, said everyone was welcome.

“We have been honoured to host significant ‘Royal’ moments over the last 12 months. This is another opportunity to gather with friends, family and the wider community. To celebrate, to give thanks and offer something back to the area.

More here.

Derby Cathedral too is livestreaming the Coronation – part of a weekend of events at the Cathedral which includes taking part in the Coronation Big Lunch, a family event with music and children’ activities, and the cathedral is running taster sessions and volunteering activities as part of The Big Help Out.

Durham Cathedral will be lit up red, white and blue from from Friday 5 May to the evening of Tuesday 9 May when there is a special Evensong to mark the coronation with the HM Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham and the Bishop of Durham will give an address.

The Cathedral is hosting a ‘Big Lunch’ and visitors are invited to bring picnics over the coronation weekend.

Lincoln Cathedral will also light up red, white and blue over the Coronation weekend, visitors can watch the Coronation on a live screen and there are plans for a Coronation afternoon tea too.

There will be outdoor streaming of the Coronation at Peterborough Cathedral with a people’s parade. Food stalls will be available on the Cathedral Green, and people can bring their own picnics. The Coronation will be followed by a Coronation Concert at 4pm, with Peterborough’s own former chorister and now opera singer, Gabriella, Lucy’s Pop Choir, the Peterborough Community Gospel Choir and Tu danse. Tickets (£3) are needed so book soon!

On Sunday there is a Coronation themed service of Choral Evensong with civic dignitaries with special Coronation music from the Cathedral Choir.

Over the Coronation weekend, Peterborough is offering a special guided tour, Royal Connections weaves the history of the Cathedral with the stories of its royal visits, celebrations and births.
