Blackburn Cathedral will invite visitors to uncover the rich history and significance of the garments worn by clergy over the last century when it hosts a vestments exhibition later this month.
Faith worn into the fabric of everyday life – Blackburn Cathedral unveils new exhibition with leading British textile designer
Fabric of Faith will include historic pieces from its archive and brand new pieces – including an art installation by acclaimed British textile artist and designer Margo Selby.
The exhibition, presented by the Friends of Blackburn Cathedral, is part of the cathedral’s centenary programme and will explore how faith is woven into the fabric of everyday life.
It will showcase a range of historical pieces from Blackburn Cathedral archives, whilst also explaining the theology of religious garments and the rich history and importance of fabric production and weaving to the region.
And a new set of vestments specially designed to mark the centenary will be unveiled.
Following the four liturgical colours, the new vestments will explore themes from the Bible whilst weaving together ideas of community, unity, and the Trinity.
These pieces have been designed and woven by Margo Selby and will combine contemporary artistry with the traditional craft of hand weaving.
A spokesperson for the cathedral said,
‘These new pieces will be both beautiful and symbolic and are a wonderful way to mark this milestone.
‘Many will recall Margot’s project – Breathing Colour – which was displayed here in the Cathedral during The Festival of Making in 2024, and we are delighted that she is bringing her expertise and distinctive artistic vision to this project.
‘This striking new artwork will accompany and enhance this significant collaboration,’ he added.
Margo Selby is a woven textile artist and designer, celebrated for her bold use of colour and pattern. Working from her Whitstable studio, Margot’s projects include large-scale public installations and finely crafted interior accessories and highlight the versatility and contemporary relevance of woven design.
