The 2026 National Cathedral’s Conference will focus on the dissemination of two pieces of research conducted on behalf of the AEC. These research reports will highlight the spiritual, economic, social and cultural impact that cathedrals’ have in their local communities, and these themes will be a thread throughout the whole conference programme. In addition to the research, we will also benefit from the wisdom and experience of our hosts at Bristol Cathedral, and will explore with them the themes of contested heritage and racial justice.
As we seek to share and understand the research findings, we will be inviting a youth panel to reflect and engage with us and we will be asking the questions ‘What is it to be a Cathedral?’ and ‘What is it to be British?’. We will also be exploring issues of leadership in an anxious world, and understanding how we engage with secular issues such as AI, Gender and Cultural Heritage.
Our cathedrals have weathered difficult and turbulent times in the past. And we will again – but only through collaboration. Under one roof we will take the long view together, we will discuss and work on a strategic vision which will steer the future direction of our cathedrals. We’ll also look at issues which require more urgent action from climate change
This is a place for cathedral clergy, lay staff and chapter and council members to take stock. A renewing retreat, time for wisdom gathering, learning and exchange. An environment to develop cathedrals’ important roles as places of prayer, inspiration, education, challenge and debate. An opportunity to leave feeling deeply refreshed, strengthened and energised.
