Jane Austen’s Favourite Brother, Henry – Book launch and signing by Christopher Herbert
Henry Austen, Jane Austen’s favourite brother, was born into a clergy family in Hampshire. He shared Jane’s wit, supported her writing, and led a varied life as academic, editor, soldier, banker, and clergyman. His career ranged from high society to bankruptcy, with activities sometimes bordering on illegality. Despite ups and downs, Henry remained loyal to Jane, ensuring her burial in Winchester Cathedral and serving as curate in Surrey and Hampshire.
This study explores Henry’s role in the Austen family and early nineteenth-century society, highlighting experiences that may have influenced Jane’s work.
