Brick by Brick at Derby Cathedral

16th June 2025

A luminous lightwork will tell the story of the Magna Carta and the North in Durham,  a modern art installation inspired by the unknown story of the women behind the 1969 Moon Landing comes to Canterbury, there’s a brick by brick festival at Derby to promote creativity and community, a light organ at Blackburn, and Shakespeare’s letter that shed new light on his relationship with his wife goes on display in Hereford Cathedral – just some of the events planned this summer in our cathedrals.

#WishYouWereHere – Summer in our Cathedrals – what will you discover?

All our cathedrals have exciting programmes for everyone throughout this summer – from headline exhibitions to family days and arts and crafts – and all are underpinned by the daily rhythm of prayer and worship.

Some of our cathedrals charge entry and there may be a fee at others for specific events, but all our cathedrals are free to enter for prayer, worship or to light a candle.

Do check on the cathedral’s individual website for up-to-date information before you travel.

And don’t forget to share your pictures and tag us #WishYouWereHere – our summer campaign this year.

Brick by Brick at Derby Cathedral – promoting creativity and community this summer

Derby Cathedral has unveiled the centrepiece of its summer programme.

It is inviting visitors to experience Brick by Brick – Building a Solid Foundation, a unique art installation and festival highlighting environmental sustainability through creativity and community engagement, using LEGO bricks.

At the heart of the festival is a first-of-its-kind, model of Derby Cathedral and the surrounding city centre, crafted entirely from LEGO bricks by renowned artist Brick This, showcasing local landmarks and businesses.

Running from Friday 25th July to Thursday 21st August 2025, the event will be open during Cathedral hours and offers a wide range of interactive activities, talks, and workshops including a pre-school zone and SEN quiet mornings – with more events to come.

Families, schools, tourists, and community members will be invited to build solar-powered LEGO vehicles, windmills, and more – connecting learning with play and encouraging future-facing, environmentally conscious thinking.

The Dean of Derby, the Very Revd Dr Peter Robinson said

“We’re excited to host an event that merges art, education, and sustainability in such an engaging way.

‘Brick by Brick will bring people of all ages into the Cathedral space, fostering conversation and creativity around our journey to Net Zero.”

Entry to Derby Cathedral during the event will be free, with a suggested donation of £3 per person. A charge may apply for some events and activities, raising vital funds towards the Cathedral’s goal of reaching Carbon Neutrality.

The event could not go ahead without the support of local business including Ecclesiastical, Rothera Bray Solicitors, Cloud Next and The Iron Ram and others.

Interested sponsors and partners should get in touch with the cathedral to discuss.
