What is Choral Evensong?
Evensong is a FREE service which is held at many cathedrals and churches that provides a restful, peaceful and contemplative time (about 30 to 45 minutes) at the even point of the day, between the end of the working day and night-time.
It is for that reason Evensong is the perfect opportunity to relax after a busy day.
Typically, Evensong takes place sometime between 5 and 6 pm Monday through Friday. Earlier at the weekends. But see below for details of how to check for specific times of Evensong services near you.
Is there any religious commitment required?
None whatsoever.
Who can attend?
Everyone can attend Choral Evensong. Atheist, agnostic, Christian, everyone is welcome.
And if it’s your first time, don’t worry – they’ll be no one pestering you to do anything other than sit down and enjoy the experience. You can also stand if you want to.
Does Choral Evensong take place at the weekend?
Many churches and cathedrals do hold Evensong services at the weekend.
Is there something similar at Roman Catholic churches and cathedrals?
That’ll be Choral Vespers. Choral Vespers actually predates Choral Evensong.
