Coventry Hiroshima Remembrance

Coventry Cathedral will mark Coventry Hiroshima Remembrance on August 6 remembering that fateful day in 1945 when an atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, and a second one on Nagasaki three days later.

At least 100,000 were killed instantly and in the first few days, and many more died later due to the effects of the radiation.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of this event.
This year the Coventry Hiroshima Remembrance will be led by Manjit Kaur, a member of Coventry Sikh Sangat and Chair of the Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education (SACRE), the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Rachel Lancaster, Counsellor Kentaro Kaneto of the Embassy of Japan and Ms Sophie Bolt who is general secretary of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
There will be a reading of letters between Hiroshima and Coventry and the Sadako story will be told by pupils from Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic School.
All are welcome and people are invited to come together to make paper cranes for peace and there will be readings by the committee.
Coventry Lord Mayor’s Committee for Peace and Reconciliation is made up of around 20 peace activists. They have been organising events promoting peace and reconciliation both within the City and beyond since 1980. It currently organises a range of events including the Lord Mayor’s Peace Lecture, Hiroshima Day Commemoration, Young People’s Peace.
