Dan Beal, a glazier at Lincoln Cathedral has received a special award for his dedication and the quality of his work.

Jo Vitoria from the Friends of Lincoln Cathedral said that Dan was a very deserving recipient of this award.

“Dan is a quiet man, who expects no thanks or recognition of his incredible work in maintaining the Cathedral’s glass. He has extensive experience in the conservation and restoration of stained glass, and has worked on a myriad of projects, both ecclesiastical and secular.

‘He obviously has a great passion for glass, in all its forms, and continues to make a distinctive contribution to the life of Lincoln Cathedral’s Works Department.”

There are more than 700 windows in Lincoln Cathedral, of which 140 are made of stained glass. One of Dan’s most recent projects was on the medieval lancet windows in the southwest transept of the Cathedral, where his devoted craftsmanship has breathed new life into the beautiful and precious glass, ensuring that it will continue to enhance the Cathedral for generations to come.

The Friend’s Award was created in 2024 to thank those involved with either the fabric or the music of the Cathedral, who create something very special to enhance the beauty and reputation of Cathedral, and who go above and beyond the normal contribution expected of them.

Last year the award went to Gary Jackson-Croft who produced a remarkable piece of work, redesigning the Canon Missioner’s stall, blending modern joinery seamlessly with the original 14th century wood.
