Lent at Chichester Cathedral
18th February 2026
Speaking truth in this fake news era, new art exhibitions for reflection and contemplation, lectures from leading figures from the creative arts on deepening spirituality, and forty cathedrals in forty days – just some of the opportunities for reflection, contemplation, and shared worship in our cathedrals this season.
Walking in Jesus’ footsteps this Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Lent begins today with Ash Wednesday, marking the start of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness and represent the busiest and most significant dates in the Christian calendar.
Throughout this season, you will find a variety of worship, talks, discussion groups, art exhibitions, study, arts and crafts and lunches.

Chichester Cathedral has just unveiled a series of paintings that take the visitor on a journey from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost.
Ashes to Fire is seven large-scale oil paintings by Alice Carter that offer a painterly meditation on key moments in the Easter Cycle.

Her carefully considered compositions trace the emotional arc of the Easter story – from the solemnity of Ash Wednesday to the blazing energy of Pentecost.
Through bold colour, layered symbolism, and moments of quiet intensity, Carter reflects on themes of grief, hope, and transformation, capturing the journey from ashes to fire in a contemporary visual language.
Alice said:
“I hope my paintings give people a chance to pause and feel connected to something bigger than themselves”.
In conjunction with Ashes to Fire, the Cathedral will run a programme of events, including special tours led by the artist. The exhibition is on display until 5 April.
Other worship and events for Lent include a Holy Hour every Thursday in the Lady Chapel which invites people to join in prayer and meditation for any amount of time during the hour.
