Lent at Newcastle Cathedral – 40 cathedrals in 40 days
18th February 2026
Speaking truth in this fake news era, new art exhibitions for reflection and contemplation, lectures from leading figures from the creative arts on deepening spirituality, and forty cathedrals in forty days – just some of the opportunities for reflection, contemplation, and shared worship in our cathedrals this season.
Walking in Jesus’ footsteps this Lent, Holy Week and Easter.
Lent begins today with Ash Wednesday, marking the start of the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness and represent the busiest and most significant dates in the Christian calendar.
Throughout this season, you will find a variety of worship, talks, discussion groups, art exhibitions, study, arts and crafts and lunches.

Newcastle Cathedral – a pilgrimage around 40 cathedrals in 40 days
The Dean of Newcastle, the Very Revd Lee Batson, is inviting people to join him for Forty Cathedrals in Forty Days as he listens to a sermon from a different Anglican Cathedral from across the world every day during Lent.
Participants will receive a WhatsApp link to a YouTube livestream so they can listen to the sermon at their convenience and there is the opportunity for comment with others in the group as well as time to reflect together on what they have heard.
There will also be a couple of opportunities to come together on Zoom to reflect with others.
Newcastle Cathedral Reader, Katherine Govier is inviting people to dive deeper into Bloomsbury’s 2026 Lent Book, ‘Easter in Disguise’ by Liz Dodd, one of the UK’s youngest nuns.
Easter in Disguise blends of contemporary spirituality, scriptural reflection and tales for a refreshing and vibrant take on an ancient season.
This book is a companion to the six weeks of Lent and its gospel focus corresponds to one of Jesus’ six spiritualities of social justice.
It culminates in a fresh look at the traditions of Holy Week. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and a suggested spiritual practice.
Do check out Newcastle’s website to sign up for these and find our more about other events and opportunities this Lent.
