Mars lands in Leicester Cathedral – Wish you were here

27th May 2025

A second world war plane suspended in the nave, Mars, Peace Doves, an Escape Room, an exhibition celebrating water, and the retelling of the Bible in 25million stitches – all our cathedrals have exciting programmes of events for everyone this summer and all are underpinned by the daily rhythm of prayer and worship.

Some of our cathedrals charge entry and there may be a fee at others for specific events, but all our cathedrals are free to enter for prayer, worship or to light a candle.

Do check on the cathedral’s individual website for up-to-date information before you travel.

And don’t forget to share your pictures and tag us #WishYouWereHere – our summer campaign this year.

Mars lands in Leicester Cathedral

Artist Luke Jerram’s Mars has landed in Leicester Cathedral and is at the centre of a packed programme of events for all ages, that include music, dancing, theatre, mindfulness, crafts, soft play, dinner and theological discussion.

Following the success of Jerram’s Museum of the Moon and Gaia installations, Mars has been  suspended in the nave of the cathedral.

This seven-metre diameter installation uses detailed NASA imagery to recreate the Martian surface. It will slowly rotate and is accompanied by a specially commissioned soundscape by Ivor Novello and BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones to evoke the wonder of space exploration and the complex history of human conflict.

Entry during Cathedral opening hours is by voluntary donation (suggested £8 per person), with no booking required.

Evening events will require booking and you can find all the details of the events here.

The installation and events have been made possible thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
