#More than a Building – Katie Burke – Apprentice
Katie Burke’s favourite spot in Manchester Cathedral is the organ loft, which she recently discovered; high up, and out of the way of everyone else, with its spectacular views of the building itself.
Katie, aged 18, is currently serving an apprenticeship at the Cathedral as an admin assistant covering a variety of office junior jobs and some reception work, while she studies. She admits she’s not religious but loves the peace and calm of the Cathedral.
She hopes one day to go to university to study journalism and work for a well-known newspaper and eventually write her own horror novel.
She said:
“Although I am very happy at the minute, I am always looking for the next best thing and would love to one day go to university and hopefully study Journalism.
“I am interested in all aspects of the media and have a good eye for great stories!”
Katie was born and raised in North Manchester and currently lives in Moston with her mum and stepdad. She hopes to be offered a more permanent position at the Cathedral once she has completed her course.
Manchester Cathedral is host to 20 bees this summer as part of Bee in the City public art participation project presented by Wild in Art and supported by Manchester City Council. This art walk brings 100 super-sized bee sculptures- all decorated by different community groups, schools and individuals – to the streets in a celebration of the city’s creativity and pioneering spirit. Come and see them until Sept 23.
