National Day of Reflection : March 9, 2025

This Sunday has been designated the National Day of Reflection and 2025 will be the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the pandemic.

An artist will create a six metre large canvas mural designed to encourage reflection on the floor of the ruins of Coventry Cathedral and the new cathedral will be open all day for those wishing to light a candle, say a prayer or just sit a while and reflect on the Covid pandemic.

The artist, Katie O’Sullivan (known as Katie O) said she hoped the artwork would have meaning for anyone who had struggled mentally and physically during the pandemic, and added,

“I hope the artwork speaks to people who lost loved ones.”

Coventry Cathedral will hold a service for the Day of Reflection at 4pm in the ruins.

Guildford Cathedral will mark the Day of Reflection on Sunday, lighting a memorial candle to remember all those who lost their lives since the pandemic began and to honour the tireless work and acts of kindness shown during this unprecedented time.

The candle will be placed in the Lady Chapel,  which is open all day, offering a quiet space for private prayer and reflection.

Choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday will consist of readings and music to aid reflection. There will be bespoke prayers offered for those who have died as a result of the pandemic and the Dean of St Paul’s will lead an act of remembrance and commitment at the end of the service.

The event starts at 3pm and is ticketed. Click here.

Choral Evensong in Truro Cathedral on Sunday afternoon will be a special service to mark the COVID-19 day of reflection, with bible readings chosen to mark the anniversary, music from Truro Cathedral Choir and an opportunity to light a candle and remember those who died or whose lives were changed as a result of the pandemic.

The service will be live-streamed on their YouTube channel to enable people to join in from home.

Bradford Cathedral has invited people to come and join them and light a candle as they mark the Day of Reflection at each of their services, 8am, 10:30am and 3:30pm this Sunday.

And Westminster Abbey’s service of Evensong on Sunday will reflect on the Covid-19 pandemic and prayers will be said to commemorate the 5th anniversary.

The Government has produced guides and resources to help people join in events to navigate this poignant anniversary. The NHS Charities Together commemoration ceremony will take place at the National Memorial Arboretum this Sunday at noon and will be livestreamed.
