11th June 2025
Three peregrine falcon chicks have successfully hatched at St Albans Cathedral this week.
Peregrine chicks hatch at St Albans – nature at its most determined
The peregrines successfully laid a second clutch of three eggs last month after the first clutch was destroyed on April 7.
The first chick appeared on Monday before 6am, chick number two appeared a few hours later at 1.45pm and at 6.45am today (Wednesday 11 June), the final egg, chick number three hatched.
The Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans Cathedral and chair of the Association of English Cathedrals, said:
“This is an incredible testament to the wonder and glory of creation, and the resilience that is within it. Our Cathedral has witnessed something truly special, nature at its most determined.
“These chicks are a symbol of the gift of life, which will not be defeated.”
Lea Ellis, engagement manager at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust said:
“We’re delighted to see the wonderful comeback these birds have made, demonstrating just how resilient they are. “
St Albans resident peregrine falcons, Alban and Boudica, are one of only five breeding pairs in the country.
Follow Alban and Boudica and their new chicks through the Peregrine Live Cam in partnership with Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, sponsored this year by Opticron.
