Remembrance – St Albans Cathedral

29th October 2025

Remembrance in our cathedrals will mark the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) and Victory over Japan (VJ)

An evening dress made out of poppies, a new piece of art to commemorate all those who gave their lives from the African diaspora, a Roll of Honour projected onto cathedral walls, new tours that tell the stories of local heroes, and thousands upon thousands of poppies will fall silently from our towers in an act of contemplation and remembrance for all those lives lost.

A Roll of Honour for all those lives lost is incorporated into Poppy Fields, a light and sound installation at St Albans to mark Remembrance.

Poppy Fields, an immersive sound and light art installation that reflects the end of war and the hope for peace opens in St Albans Cathedral this week.

The show, by Luxmuralis, uses digital projections including thousands of poppies to transform the interior of the building, and asks the visitor to reflect on war and seek peace in our world.

Particularly poignant for St Albans is the inclusion of local loved ones’ name, rank and regiment that will be projected as a unique Roll of Honour onto one of the cathedral walls.

During Poppy Fields there is footage of war poetry read by Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne OBE. The Roll of Honour will be available to see throughout the light show, which runs until Saturday 1 November.
