St Edmundsbury cathedral celebrates 20 years of its Millennium Tower
St Edmundsbury Cathedral has announced a series of events and activities throughout summer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its iconic Millennium Tower.
Completed in 2005, the 150-foot tower stands as a testament to modern craftsmanship and was coined ‘a spiritual beacon for the new millennium’ by project patron, His Majesty Prince Charles (now HRH King Charles III).
And to mark the occasion the cathedral has put together a programme of events and services including an exhibition that opened this week telling the story of the build, showcasing original designs, the people who built the tower, and the history behind the tower’s construction.
This Sunday (June 22) there will be a special Evensong service to commemorate the tower’s anniversary.
Later this summer, there’s a new piece of music written by Sarah Cattley at a Cathedral Choir festival especially to mark the 20th anniversary of the Tower and a talk by Horry Parsons, the Tower’s Project Manager, which includes a guided climb.
Other events include a charity abseil down the tower to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), tower tours, Art on the Garth inviting people to create their own work of art and an invitation to complete the tower on the LEGO® Cathedral Project by the end of summer!
Visitor Experience Manager, Sarah Friswell, says of the programme of events,
“There’s really something for everyone with our tower celebrations, from tours to art to LEGO! Whether you’re a local or a tourist, we invite you to visit your Cathedral this summer and marvel in just what a feat of architecture and building our wonderful tower is.”
