VE Day – St Albans Cathedral
25th April 2025
St Albans Cathedral will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special choral evensong on Thursday, 8 May sung by the Abbey Singers.
Commemoration and celebration: St Albans marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day
During the service, there will be an act of remembrance and prayers will be offered for peace in our world today.
The service will be followed by bell-ringing as the Cathedral Change Ringers take part in the National Ring Out in Celebration event from 6.30pm.
The Ring Out event mirrors that same moment, on 8 May 1945, when bells rang out across Britain as the nation took to the streets in celebration of Victory in Europe Day.
And to mirror the street parties on that day when thousands of people across the UK took to the streets in celebration, St Albans has organise its own VE Day celebrations and dance in the Nave on Saturday 10 May at 7.30pm.
There will be drinks and puddings before dancing the evening away to vintage sounds performed by the Fleetville Swing Band. 1940s dress is encouraged (though not compulsory)!
A pay bar will be running and tickets to include a pudding are £20.
