Worcester Cathedral Choir has announced it will be joined by composer Sir John Rutter at a concert this Saturday (15 March), featuring works by Rutter, as well as Edward Elgar and Pierre Villette.

During the concert the choir will perform Psalmfest – a sequence of psalm settings by Rutter.
They will also perform works by Elgar (who was a founder of the Friends of Worcester Cathedral), Villette (who had a close association with former Cathedral Director of Music, Donald Hunt), and Sir John Rutter, whose contribution to music, particularly choral music, was marked with a knighthood in the King’s Birthday honours in 2024.
Worcester Cathedral’s Director of Music, Samuel Hudson, said:
“It will be wonderful to have Sir John in Worcester for the day’s events including for our concert, not least as it is a special birthday year for John! It will be an honour to consider our concert part of his 80th birthday celebrations!”
Earlier in the day, Sir John will deliver one of his ‘Come and Sing‘ events as part of the Worcester Competitive Arts Festival, from 11am-4.45pm in College Hall.
Singers aged 9 and upwards are welcome (under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult) to join John and explore some of his repertoire, along with other works.
He will also deliver his talk ‘Confessions of a Composer‘ about his life and works from 6pm until 7.15pm, immediately before the concert.
Tickets are strictly limited for the ‘Come and Sing’ event and talk, and must be purchased in advance here.
Concert tickets are priced from £10-£20 (accompanied children under 16 are free) and this special concert is in aid of The Friends of Worcester Cathedral (Registered charity No. 517009).
