LOUDFence – Ely Cathedral

16th November 2022

A LOUDfence has been installed in Ely Cathedral this week as part of a diocesan-wide Season of Safeguarding to raise awareness of issues that affect all our communities including hate crime, domestic violence and modern slavery.

LOUDFence installed at Ely Cathedral.

People can tie ribbons – in person and virtually – on Ely’s LOUDfence installation to show their solidarity with those affected by abuse. It will be in place all week until Friday.

The Dean of Ely, the Very Revd Mark Bonney, said:

“Safeguarding is the responsibility of each and every one of us, and as a community we all have a duty to recognise the devastating effect that abuse, both current and historical, has on so many. It is critically important that our eyes, ears and hearts are open to what survivors say to us.

“We hope these ribbons will serve as a symbol of our support for all those who have suffered, both victims and survivors, of serious harm and abuse, and be a sign that we will be doing all we can to make our church a place that is safe for everyone.

The cathedral and the Diocese of Ely has brought together a wide range of organisations that offer advice and support for victims and survivors of harm and abuse. These include the Domestic Abuse & Sexual Violence Service, Independent Domestic Violence Advisory Service (IDVA), Survivors Voices, Hate Crime Awareness, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Local Safeguarding Partnership Board and the Clewer Initiative.

There will be a webinar on A Theology of Safeguarding by the Ven Richard Harlow, Archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech and a host of other webinars to encompass safeguarding issues for all our communities.

Check out the programme here and register for zoom links.

Plus you can place a virtual ribbon the LOUDfence here.
