Armistice 2018 – Southwell Remembers

31st October 2018

One hundred years since the guns of World War I fell silent, Southwell Minster commemorates all those who lost their lives, including over 100 men from Southwell. The Cathedral also pauses to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War II and all wars since: We will remember them.

The Dean, the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan, says:

“Remembrance Sunday has become more meaningful over the last few years, especially among the young who instinctively understand why we need to join with others to pause and remember those who lost their lives or were wounded mentally and physically by war. This year carries deeper memories for our nation, marking the Centenary of the Armistice and the Minster will be a focus for reflection and prayers for peace.”

Two main services will be held:

Tuesday 6 November, at 4.30pm – Nottinghamshire County Council Centenary Commemoration of the ending of The Great War in Southwell Minster

Sunday 11 November, 10.15-11am– The Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Service
The Burgage, Southwell

This will be followed by a parade to Southwell Minster for the Southwell Minster Remembrance Day Service, 11.10am.

Friday 9 November, 10.15am– Laying of wreath at Holy Trinity Church memorial

Friday 9 November, 11.00am– Laying of wreath at Southwell Methodist Church memorial

Other events include:

Ringing Remembers, 12.30pm, 11th November – Southwell Minster
The bells of Southwell Minster will be rung at 12.30pm to align with the request from Her Majesty’s Government that churches up and down the country ring their bells to coincide with the published agenda for the procession and marches in celebration of peace.

Eucharist (Fauré’s Requiem), 3.30pm, The Quire, Southwell Minster

Continuing our centenary commemorations of the Armistice, this special Eucharist provides space for remembrance and reflection, particularly for those who have died as a result of conflict. The musical setting will be Fauré’s Requiem, sung by the Cathedral Choir.

MIGH (Music In the Great Hall) – Special war centenary performance, 7.30pm, refreshments from 7pm.
State Chamber, The Archbishop’s Palace
Stephen Cooper (baritone) with Paul Hale (piano)
Local baritone Stephen Cooper returns with accompanist Paul Hale to perform a programme of songs to mark the centenary of the Great War Armistice, including music by Butterworth and Gurney, other settings of war poetry, and a selection of popular songs from the period.

There But Not There – 29 October – 17 November
As part of a national installation for the fallen, Southwell Minster will be exhibiting 20 ‘silhouette tommies’. All visitors are invited to sit and reflect upon this poignant act of remembrance in the peaceful and loving surroundings of the Minster.

Heroes’ Walk – 29 October – 17 November
To mark the centenary of the end of The First World War, 100 vinyl poppies will be placed down the West Walkway to Southwell Minster.

Yarnbombing Remembers
Southwell’s secret Yarn Bomber is back and this year the theme is of course one of remembrance. Hundreds of knitted poppies have been placed around the grounds of Southwell Minster and throughout the town acting as a poignant reminder of all those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and all the wars since. The Handford Brothers are remembered on Queen Street (see photos) and have a stained glass window dedicated to them in the cathedral. They died on the same day in the same battle;both were killed in action on 15thFebruary 1915 at Hohenzollern.

Southwell Choral Society presents Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man– 17 November, 7.30pm, The Nave, Southwell Minster. A Mass for Peace to commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War. Tickets available from The Cathedral Shop in person or on 01636 812933.

#SouthwellRemembers
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
