05th September 2025

Music lovers and walkers alike are invited to take part in a unique day of song and pilgrimage through the stunning landscapes that inspired Constable.

Organised by Cantus Firmus Trust in partnership with St Edmundsbury Cathedral, the Pilgrimage of Song offers a blend of walking, singing, and community spirit.

Constable Country Pilgrimage of Song – St Edmundsbury Cathedral

Participants will enjoy a six-mile route through some of Suffolk and Essex’s beautiful countryside, pausing at historic churches along the way to sing short services.

The journey begins at Stratford St Mary Church at 9.30 am, with bacon rolls and a music workshop to prepare singers for the day. The walk then continues through East Bergholt, Dedham and Flatford, with music ranging from simple congregational songs to pieces for more experienced choral singers.

The day concludes with a hot meal at St Mary’s Church, Lawford.

All abilities are welcome and for those unable to walk the full distance, travel by car is possible.

The event will be directed by Richard Hubbard, Artistic Director of Cantus Firmus Trust and Music Development Director at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

This year’s Pilgrimage of Song coincides with the Suffolk Churches’ Ride’n’Stride Day, offering participants the chance to combine both events by following the pilgrimage route as a Ride’n’Stride journey.

Advance booking is essential. Full details and booking information here.
