St Albans ‘Passes Go’

01st March 2024

St Albans has landed its very own special edition MONOPOLY board – after fighting off stiff competition from five other potential Hertfordshire locations.

St Albans on the monopoly board

The announcement was made at St Albans Cathedral this week – tipped to take the prestigious Mayfair spot on the board!

The Very Revd Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans, said:

“St Albans Cathedral is overjoyed at the successful nomination of our city as the location of the next MONOPOLY game.

“The extraordinary history and vibrancy of this wonderful city will bring this family favourite to life in a new and exciting way.

“We are particularly thrilled that our Cathedral, the home of Alban Britain’s first saint and martyr, is being tipped already to be the Mayfair spot!. We can’t wait to play it.”.

Last month, the public was invited to nominate one location in Hertfordshire to get its very own official MONOPOLY board produced by Winning Moves UK, an official MONOPOLY maker, under license from Hasbro, which is producing this brand-new special edition game.

And now the public is being asked to suggest St Albans landmarks to be featured on famous MONOPOLY spaces and ideas for the Chance and Community Chest cards.

The St Albans Edition game will see 30+ city landmarks and favourites showcased on the board, replacing the likes of ‘Mayfair’ and ‘Park Lane’ from the classic MONOPOLY original. The property sets will be themed in genres, from tourism to heritage, arts to business, entertainment to education, shopping to leisure, and lots more.

The quartet of train stations from the classic MONOPOLY original will take on a ‘travel’ theme and the Chance and Community Chest cards will be customised too.

Ella Gibbs, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK, said:

“A huge congratulations to St Albans, and well done to the cities and towns for making the shortlist.

“St Albans came out on top in Hertfordshire based on its pride, stunning landmarks and heritage.

We know we’ll be wonderfully spoiled with choices when putting this special edition of the game together,” she added.

Suggestions can be made in two ways:

1. By email to: stalbans@winningmoves.co.uk and

2. Via the official MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition Facebook page.

Nominations will be accepted for consideration from 10am on 27th February 2024 until 11.59pm on 10th March 2024. The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition game will hit shops in October.

Over the last 30 years, Winning Moves UK has produced select official versions of MONOPOLY including a number of our cathedral cities – including Canterbury, Chester, Coventry, Derby, Durham, Exeter, Guildford, Hereford, Liverpool, Salisbury and Winchester. A new Peterborough edition was announced earlier this month.

Both the St Albans and the Peterborough Edition Games will be in the shops in time for Christmas.

MONOPOLY first hit shelves in 1935 with the Racecar, Thimble, Boot, Top Hat, and Battleship among the original set of MONOPOLY tokens and while the brand has evolved over the past 89 years, the gameplay and iconography of the classic MONOPOLY game has remained unchanged and is enjoyed by more than one billion players in 114 countries across the globe.
