In the first of its kind, Art and Design students from the City of Bristol College have launched a take-over of Evensong in Bristol Cathedral using immersive light and sound projections.
Student Takeover at Evensong
The Level 3 Second Year students have worked with local projection artist, James Bragg to create Echoes of Light, an Evensong project that will premiere in Bristol Cathedral on Tuesday 19 May.
It is the first time students have collaborated with Bristol Cathedral, and their task was to explore the relationship between the architecture, light, and sound of the cathedral transforming Evensong into an immersive sensory experience complete with live choral music from the cathedral’s lay clerks.
Student, Nathan Saidro, said,
‘Being able to produce work for a space as historic as the cathedral is massive.
‘It forces you to think about sound and light in a way that’s completely immersive.
‘It’s not just a project; it feels like we’re actually shifting the atmosphere of a landmark.’
This unique creative collaboration is part of the cathedral’s Grand Organ Festival which celebrates the return of its Grand Organ following an 18 month restoration programme with a festival of sound.
The Evensong Project also coincides with the third National Cathedrals’ Conference which will see 49 cathedrals from England, Wales and Ireland gather under one roof to discuss new research that asks what are cathedrals for today.
The Dean of Bristol, the Very Revd Mandy Ford, said,
‘We are very excited by this collaboration and the opportunity to give these students creative access to our beautiful building!’
