Lichfield Cathedral’s latest community craft initiative is the Poppy Project, an 18-month project bringing people together from across Lichfield and the wider diocese to create a shared act of remembrance.
Lichfield Cathedral launches community Poppy Project for Remembrance 2027
Delivered in partnership with The Fabric Vault, the project will culminate in a large-scale sweeping installation at Lichfield Cathedral for Remembrance 2027, made entirely from community-crafted poppies in red, purple, black and white.
The project aims to bring together more than 100,000 handmade poppies, each created by a member of the community and joined into one collective artwork.
Poppies may be created in a range of colours, each carrying its own meaning:
- Red – remembering victims of war and conflict
- Purple – remembering animals affected by war
- Black – remembering African and Caribbean communities
- White – remembering those committed to peace
Together, the poppies will form a shared artwork that reflects memory, hope and community through many individual acts of creativity.
Everyone is invited to take part, regardless of experience, using textile methods such as knitting, crochet, sewing or embroidery and poppies can be any size and may include green leaves; each one should include a loop or piece of string so it can be attached to the final installation.
Completed poppies can be dropped off at the cathedral or The Fabric Vault.
Free community Poppy Stitch Club sessions are held at the Cathedral throughout the project, offering opportunities to learn new skills, meet others and contribute in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
