Gideon Klein was a bright and brilliant young composer living in Prague in the 1930s.  For him, music was his lifeline, for others resistance; for Gideon’s doting sister, it could be hubris. In an age of unfolding atrocity, what do you do when the music of personal solace can be used as a tool of your oppression? Amid hate, war, and propaganda, should your music play on no matter what the cost?

Gideon: a play with music” challenges audiences to engage deeply with history, find hidden hope, and draw strength from art as we confront upheaval in our own world.

It is a co-production between Bradford Cathedral, Bradford Reform Synagogue and Modalways CIC. We bring this important story to Bradford during its City of Culture year, a year that marks the 80th year since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the end of WWII, Gideon Klein’s death, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

CW: This show contains reference to genocide/holocaust, antisemitism, death, murder, violence, nazis and may depict some of these elements.  It is an adaptation of David Fligg’s theatrical ‘Gideon Klein: Portrait of a Composer’ and biography ‘Don’t Forget About Me’.

This show is supported by public funding from Arts Council England.  Cast and Creative Team to be announced.
