Chester Cathedral – Spirit of Summer

30th July 2026

A giant marble run, exhibitions and immersive screening experiences that transports visitors to a British seaside holiday complete with deckchairs, a climbing wall, family activities and Kiosk, a unique artwork made of reclaimed pews that invite you to linger longer, and reflect on our common ground.

Chester Cathedral launches Spirit of Summer

Spirit of Summer runs throughout the summer holidays until the end of August at Chester Cathedral – a season-long programme of installations, exhibitions, activities and events with something for every age and every pace.

The centrepiece is Kiosk, artist, Wolfgang Weileder’s architectural sculpture constructed from reclaimed wooden church pews that draws on the visual language of Islamic architecture.

Kiosk is conceived as a contemplative space as well as a focus to explore wider issues of social inclusion, diversity and common ground in our society.

Integrating the materials of one religious community with the iconography of another, Kiosk negotiates cultural difference in several ways: as a tangible symbol of religious diversity and respect by providing a focus for debate that leads to greater understanding and tolerance, and a place where diverse communities can meet.

There’s a 10-metre Giant Marble Run in the Nave that journeys past landmarks of Chester handcrafted by local artist Russell Kirk, the marble theme continues in the cathedral and across the city with an illustrated trail by local artist Kidda Kinsey.

Postcards from Rhyl is a photography exhibition by artist Stephen Clarke that brings  together striking photomontages that layer images of Rhyl across the decades. There are thirteen films from the North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University that will fill the Chapter House this summer. Shown across four immersive screening experiences that transport you to the North West coast and giant garden games on offer in the garden too.
