Gloucester Cathedral receives funding boost for conservation of its world-famous Cloister.
It formed a central part of daily life for the monks who lived here and has featured on the screen in Harry Potter films and more recently, the BBC’s Wolf Hall.

Now Gloucester Cathedral’s extraordinary 14th century cloister – renowned as one of the best examples of fan vaulting in the world – has received a much-needed boost with a generous grant of £40,000 from the Headley Trust towards its ongoing conservation.
The grant will help fund the next phase of the Cathedral’s Cloister Project by supporting a range of essential works including the cleaning of the masonry and the removal of hard cement pointing to be replaced with traditional lime-based materials more appropriate for the historic fabric of the building.
Repairs will be carried out on areas of damaged stonework, with replacement of decayed stone where necessary, while the stained glass and leaded-light glazing will be cleaned and sensitively repaired too.

This latest donation builds on The Headley Trust’s previous support for the Cathedral’s stonemason apprenticeships.
