New Archbishop of Canterbury Announced

The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, Bishop of London, has been named as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.

She is the first woman to hold the post in its almost 500-year history.

The King congratulated Dame Sarah Mullally on her new role. A palace spokesperson said:

“His Majesty congratulates Bishop Sarah on her appointment as archbishop-designate, a role which is of such importance in the UK and across the global Anglican Communion.”

In her first address at Canterbury Cathedral she addressed the “profound global uncertainty” saying “the possibility of healing lies in acts of kindness and love.”

The Dean of Canterbury, the Very Revd David Monteith shared a video message.  Watch it below.

 

And the Dean of St Albans, the Very Revd Jo Kelly Moore who chairs the Association of English Cathedrals congratulated the Right Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally on her new post, and said,

‘Cathedrals find their identity and their mission in being the seat of the Bishop.  We pray for Bishop Sarah as she prepares to be installed in the seat of Augustine of Canterbury, assure her of our support, and look forward to welcoming her to our great English Cathedrals.”

Update : 30th October – The Installation of Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury will take place at Canterbury Cathedral on March 25.
