Portsmouth Cathedral has announced it has hit its fundraising target to start work on its belfry!
The appeal was launched to help fund urgent conservation work to this distinctive part of our Cathedral, protecting both an important heritage asset and a familiar feature of Portsmouth’s skyline.
The cathedral launched The Big Tower Top-Up earlier this year to protect this historic structure as it had a rare and time-sensitive chance to complete the repairs efficiently without the need for full scaffolding – a solution that would have cost four times as much!
Last month the cathedral announced that thanks to a generous anonymous donation, success obtaining two grants from Benefact Trust and Syder Foundation, and donations from the public, work can now begin in September.
A spokesperson for the cathedral said,

Whether through a donation, sharing the appeal with others, offering encouragement, or keeping the project in your prayers, every contribution has played a part in helping us reach this milestone.

Together, you are helping to preserve Portsmouth Cathedral for future generations and ensuring that this much-loved landmark continues to serve our city as a place of worship, heritage, music and community life.
