Remembrance in our cathedrals will mark the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) and Victory over Japan (VJ)
An evening dress made out of poppies, a new piece of art to commemorate all those who gave their lives from the African diaspora, a Roll of Honour projected onto cathedral walls, new tours that tell the stories of local heroes, and thousands upon thousands of poppies will fall silently from our towers in an act of contemplation and remembrance for all those lives lost.
New Local Heroes Remembered Tours in Newcastle Cathedral to mark Remembrance
Newcastle Cathedral as launched a new tour for the season of Remembrance to honour those local heroes who shaped history not just locally, but nationally and globally.
The new free 45-minute tours will explore stories of courage, sacrifice and innovation through the cathedral’s monuments and stained glass windows.
Like Admiral Lord Collingwood — born just steps from St Nicholas’ Church (now Newcastle Cathedral) — who took command after Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805; pioneering feminist Mary Astell, whose ideas were centuries ahead of her time; and the Danish sailors who found refuge in Newcastle during the Second World War.
These tours are free to attend, with a suggested donation of £7 to support the upkeep of the cathedral, continue its charitable work and keep the doors open for all.
