Gloucester Cathedral has secured a £250,000 grant from the Wolfson Foundation towards the conservation of the internationally significant Great Cloister, helping to safeguard one of the most important examples of medieval architecture in the world.
Gloucester Cathedral secures major grant to protect the world’s oldest fan-vaulted cloisters
The funding will support the next phase of the Great Cloister Project (East Walk), part of a 12-year programme to conserve Gloucester Cathedral’s iconic cloisters, built between 1351 and 1412.
The Great Cloister is recognised as the earliest known example of fan vaulting, an architectural innovation that transformed English Gothic design and continues to attract more than 300,000 visitors to Gloucester Cathedral each year.
The East Walk has reached a critical stage in its conservation. Decades of weathering, alongside inappropriate repairs carried out during the 19th and 20th centuries, have left sections of the medieval stonework vulnerable to deterioration.
The project will conserve the historic masonry, replace failing roof structures, improve rainwater management and restore historic stained glass, ensuring the Cloister can be enjoyed by future generations.
The project is about far more than repairing stone. Conservation works will provide opportunities for apprentices to train alongside Gloucester Cathedral’s renowned team of stonemasons, helping preserve traditional heritage skills.
Visitors, schools and community groups will also be able to engage directly with the live conservation project through tours, demonstrations and learning activities, bringing the Cathedral’s remarkable history to life. The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester, said:

The Great Cloister Project forms part of Gloucester Cathedral’s long-term commitment to preserving its historic fabric while widening access to its heritage. Alongside safeguarding this internationally significant monument, the programme will strengthen heritage skills, support apprenticeships and deepen public understanding of traditional conservation techniques.
The Cathedral remains open throughout the conservation programme, allowing visitors to witness skilled craftspeople at work and experience one of England’s greatest medieval buildings as its story continues to unfold.
