Durham Cathedral is inviting people to take part in a new six-day walking pilgrimage and retreat, marking the first time the Cathedral has offered an experience of this kind.
Stepping back from the busyness of life: Pilgrimage with Durham Cathedral
Developed as part of the Cathedral’s growing work in pilgrimage – part of its Vision 2033 – the new retreat combines guided walking with opportunities for prayer, reflection and shared community.
The shrine of St Cuthbert, Durham Cathedral has a long and well-established history as a place of pilgrimage. This new offering builds on centuries of tradition, while responding to a renewed interest in pilgrimage as a meaningful way to step back from the busyness of daily life.
The retreat will begin on Wednesday 19 August, and will bring together a small group of up to 15 pilgrims, who will journey on foot along the ‘Way of Light’ Northern Saints Trail, travelling between Heavenfield and Durham. Walking together over six days, participants will experience the shared rhythm of walking and hospitality, offering space for rest, conversation and reflection.
Throughout the retreat, pilgrims will stay at Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens, where accommodation and meals will be provided each evening, strengthening the sense of community within the group.
As a heritage destination situated directly on the route, with 1.5 miles of the Northern Saints Trail passing through its estate, Ushaw is well placed to welcome pilgrims, and is delighted to develop this new accommodation offer.
The six-day retreat is connected to the developing vision of the Cuthbert Centre for Pilgrimage and Prayer, which will provide a dedicated space of hospitality and spiritual reflection for pilgrims visiting the Cathedral. The Centre, which is set to open later this year, forms a key part of Durham Cathedral’s ambition to become a leading destination for life-transforming pilgrimage.

The new pilgrimage offering reflects a wider resurgence of interest in pilgrimage across the UK, with Durham Cathedral recently featuring in the BBC’s Pilgrimage series, The Road to Holy Island.
