Ripon Cathedral to fill with music and knitted poppies for Concert of Remembrance
Brass, close harmony and soprano come together for an evening of remembrance on Thursday 5 November
Ripon Cathedral will host an evening of music and remembrance on Thursday 5 November, when it joins the Ripon Community Poppy Project to present A Concert of Remembrance.
The concert is part of the city’s annual November commemorations, which mark the end of the Second World War with a spectacular display of knitted poppies.
East Cleveland Brass, formerly North Skelton Band, will return to the Cathedral for the occasion. The band’s motto is “Forged from iron. Honed in brass”, a nod to the ironstone-mining communities where its tradition began.
The soprano Charlotte Potter, who was born in North Yorkshire and trained at Chetham’s School of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, returns to Ripon after performing at the Cathedral for the D-Day 80 and VE Day 80 commemorations and last year’s Festival of Remembrance. She will perform in Durham Cathedral’s Festival of Remembrance two days later, as she has for the past four years.
The Duchy Belles, a close-harmony trio who have sung at Platinum Jubilee, D-Day and VE Day events, will bring a 1940s style of swing, pop and musical theatre. Trumpeter and conductor Mark Sidwell and organist and pianist Dr Richard Martin, who lives in Nidderdale, complete the line-up.
Remembrance at Ripon continues on Sunday 8 November with the Cathedral’s Civic Service of Remembrance at 11.45 and the Act of Remembrance on Armistice Day, November 11.
