Poppies to fall from Truro Cathedral’s central tower as the Cathedral marks Remembrance
Concert, services and a two-minute silence to honour those who gave their lives in service
Truro Cathedral offers a gathering space for the community to join in prayer, reflection and worship this week as it marks Remembrance.
The Cathedral’s programme includes thanksgiving, hope and quiet contemplation, and culminates on Remembrance Sunday with the silent fall of poppies from the central tower.
Saturday 7 November: Et Lux Perpetua
The acclaimed St Mary’s Singers will perform a moving and contemplative concert of music and poetry for remembrance. Tickets are £15 for adults, and under-18s go free.
Sunday 8 November: Remembrance Sunday
The day begins with a shortened Choral Eucharist in the Nave, live-streamed. Afterwards, the congregation will join the time of remembrance at the war memorial in Boscawen Street. Those who prefer to stay in the Cathedral will be led in a two-minute silence by a member of the clergy.
The Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance follows the laying of wreaths at the city’s war memorial. During the two-minute silence, poppies will be dropped from the Cathedral’s central tower. The service will also be live-streamed.
The Requiem for the Fallen will then take place within a service of Holy Communion, with the Cathedral Choir singing Duruflé’s Requiem as the congregation remembers, in prayer, those who gave their lives. This service will also be live-streamed.
Wednesday 11 November: Armistice Day Silence
The Cathedral community will join the nation in keeping a two-minute silence at 11.00am, recalling the moment the First World War ended and reflecting on all those who have died in the trials of human conflict.
Many of the Cathedral services will be live-streamed on Truro Cathedral’s YouTube – you can find them on the website here.
